Hitchiking in Japan. Hitchhiking is actually much easier in Southeast Asia than Japan! Japan is polite, but Southeast Asia is full of friendly souls with open arms.

Hey!

I’m William, owner and writer for the Barefoot Surfer Travel Blog.

I Started the Barefoot Surfer Travel Blog to help spread the good knowledge and experiences that I have collected over the years when it comes to travel.

-In 2023: I backpacked for 8 months through parts of Europe and Asia

-In 2024: I started a new life in a rural city in Japan, Toyama.

-As of 2025: I’m writing about the wonderful hidden gem of Japan that is Toyama, and the surrounding areas such as Kanazawa and Tateyama

If you ever want to chat about any travel, feel free to reach out!

I’ve traveled through many parts of Asia backpacking, have lived in the USA and Japan, and still have aspirations to do many types of travel including a working-holiday visa in Australia, Van life across Japan, and Motorbike across Latin America.

I picked up the common side effect of travel, the travel itch, after my first time traveling far without family. In 2019, a good friend I have known since birth and I went on a month long journey through Japan.

I just turned 17 at the time, and it was a good taste of freedom that traveling brings, but with training wheels. My good friend and I are both half Japanese, so we visited family and friends along the way.

Nonetheless, I had an amazing time taking the various transportations and walking endlessly for hours through the cities and countryside in the land of the rising sun.

Since then, I’ve been endlessly awaiting the next trip I could take. I was going to do a study abroad in University, but unforeseen events occurred across the globe the next year.

With this extra time, I spent my free time working to save up for a new trip, and a lot of time researching almost every type of travel under the sun.

I saw Eurail/Interrail traveling around Europe, van life travels across North America, surf trips in Central America, digital nomading while slowly traveling across Eastern Europe and other affordable areas, and finally, backpacking across Southeast Asia and South America.

I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree at the end of 2022, the same year I started planning my graduation getaway that I waited so long for. I decided that backpacking Southeast Asia would be a perfect start that would allow me to travel through new cultures in a safe and affordable area of the world.

As I was planning my trip, I found that a flight from the U.S. to Bangkok would cost about the same if I did two tickets from the U.S. to Europe, and then to Southeast Asia.

With this in mind, I took the opportunity as it presented itself and visited Europe, specifically Amsterdam Netherlands, all over North and Central Italy, and Istanbul Turkey.

I ended up leaving the sunshine state of Florida, starting my trip with a three month backpacking plan… which ended up extending to 8 months… and a new life in Japan.

On this sporadic trip, I’ve opted to take just myself, and everything that can fit in a 45 liter backpack, across the world.

In the future, I hope to travel in many different ways in many different places. The name “Barefoot Surfer” has probably come across your mind at some point.

Surfing is a hobby of mine that I have picked up early in life and I do plan on writing articles, for my fellow long-haired seaweed smoker, with the best information to plan a surf trip. ever.

As an overthinker, I’ve put many hours into researching everything and with personal experience, I believe that I have put together the best articles to help other travelers or future travelers.
